The Rival Claims Of Lancaster And York

Page 1

During the Wars of the Roses, the throne was claimed by both the Lancastrian and Yorkists houses of the royal family. These pages explain the source of the claims. This family tree is not complete and only shows the relevant family members.
King Edward III created the houses of Lancaster and York when he made his younger sons, Lionel, John and Edmund, the Duke of Clarence, Lancaster and York respectively. King Edward III outlived his two eldest sons, Edward and Lionel, so upon his death, the crown was passed to his grandson, King Richard II.
