Leather shoes were expensive and not particularly waterproof. So to avoid wear and tear and soggy feet, a person in the fifteenth century would invest in a pair of pattens. These are basically a good, solid, wooden sole with a hinge at the toes to aid movement. These are strapped on over your shoes.
