THE GOWN
![]() |
The gown doubles up as a coat and is worn over the kirtle. The gown is made of wool and lined with linnen. This one's rather posh as it has deep colours. Black is a particularly expensive colour and so has only been used here on the cuffs collar and belt. The gown is rucked up at the front and tucked into the belt. This makes the woman look ravishingly pregnant, a shape that was extremely desirable in an age of high mortality rates. For those larger personal items that can't be hung from the belt, a canvas scrip bag is just the thing.
