Sunshine Hafla (click here for the Sunshine website)

Ishtar performed at the Sunshine charity hafla in 2007. This was a fund raiser for the Sunshine orphanage in Luxor which Helen has visited. The orphanage is heavily dependent on help from overseas as the Egyptian government has difficulty recognising illegitimacy. Many of the children in the orphanage are actually abandoned.

The dance performed by the group was to 'Fajouka' by Eddie (The Sheik) Kochak from his 'Strictly Belly Dancing Vol 6'. This is a simple, pairs dance designed to introduce basic (and some more complex) moves to new dancers.

Rowena and Lesley performed Nila as a duet and Helen performed her Wings of Isis dance to 'Ice Queen' by Dinletir from 'The Belly Dance Superstars'.

Nila - Zill Dance - duet

Nila (Go Back to Top)

Helen choreographed a group dance to help introduce the use of zills (finger cymbals) while dancing. The rhythmns used are 'the gallop' 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2-3 and the rumba. It's a gentle and pretty dance. As a group dance, it is performed in 2 lines with the back and front rows moving in opposite directions which gives a very pleasing effect.

It has yet to be performed as a group dance, but Lesley and Rowena have adjusted it to work as a duet where they mirror each other throughout and have performed it on a number of occasions. These photos were taken at a hafla (belly dance party) in Sutton Coldfield.

The music is Nila by Eddie (The Sheik) Kochak from his 'Strictly Belly Dancing Vol 6'

Imti Essinin (Go Back to Top)

The troupe Ishtar were Helen's Intermediate class (now it is a mixed ability class). The choreography to Imti Essinin, a track on the Mezdeke 8 album, was created by the class themselves, working as a team. The choreography is a complex mixture of pair work mixed with circling and incorporates veils. The complexity of the choreography is a credit to their hard work..
The class are pictured here making their first public performance of the dance and for some of them it was the very first time they had belly danced in public. The event was a hafla (belly dance party) in Wythall in Feb 2005.
